Colors Out of the Garden and Into my Studio

The long days of gardening are drawing to a close as nights cool and the flowers fade

I love this time of year — the changes, the transitions. Of color, of light, of warmth.

Clear, crisp mornings wrapped in sweaters, sitting with my cats in a warm shaft of light by the window.

Then the sun blasts across the sky and layers fall away into warm afternoons cooling off in the pond before it gets even too chilly for me.

No longer concerned about how the garden looks to visitors, I’m leaving seeds to ripen, and grasses to bend over with rain. It’s all about the critters now, making sure they have ample food and shelter for the months ahead. Bonus, they’ll spread seeds and surprise me next year.

But I’ve got my camera at the ready — capturing all stages of color. The way petals on a pink echinacea fade to rusty tips, and the dahlias toss up their blooms like the grand finale in a fireworks show. Don’t even get me started on the hydrangeas, their colors ripening and changing each day.

The grasses and seed pods themselves are full of soft, subtle color that if I walk too quickly I’ll miss. And so I force myself to slow down and seek beauty in all stages of life.

You see, I’m pulling colors out of the garden and into my studio

… and I can’t wait to share them with you!
