Poetry Challenge Day 23: Book

Book

Remember
When we lived
In the tiny cottage
With single-pane windows
Overlooking our garden
Full of trees
We could see the lake
Back then
Before the city
Changed

We made dinner
In the toaster oven
After the big oven
Stopped working
Then the stove died too
We ate by candlelight
On a mix of dishes
Then after dinner
Drank glasses of wine
And lost ourselves
In the encyclopedias
Reading to each other
From one entry
To the next
And the next

Now our home is bigger
The windows double-pane
And the stoves and ovens all work
We no longer read encyclopedias
The internet moved too fast for them
So I’ve loaded the back of the car
With volumes from A through Z
No idea where to take them
We aren’t the only ones
Who don’t read
Encyclopedias
Anymore
