Awakened by an Owl
Awakened by a barn owl
his lone screech
pierces the early morning air
Darkness wraps himself
around the trees and across the water
like a heavy blanket pulling all creatures
down to the earth into nests, burrows and beds
All are asleep
except the owl
and me
I gaze out the window breathing in
the deep, rich scent of coffee
hints of blueberry and chocolate
perhaps
Until daylight begins flirting with night
her soft peach glow
rising gently on the horizon
Birds, squirrels and chipmunks answer
and the day begins
Note: Even though it was a barn owl this morning who inspired my writing, most of my paintings are of great horned owls which are the most common owl in our woods.
