Poetry Challenge Day 8: Listening

Listening to the Wetlands

Red wing blackbirds
Sparrows and gold finch
Chatter about sunflower seeds
In the feeder

A covey of quail
Join in
Posting a sentry on the deck rail
To warn if the cat should open his eyes
Or the pair of bald eagles
Cross overhead again

Seagulls at the beach chime in
But soon forget why
Caught up in their fight
Over a starfish

The wind picks up
Rustling tall clumps of grass
Planted next to our window

No need for a radio or TV or conversation
Just stand still
And listen
To the music of the wetlands
