Joyful Color Harmony - Spent Poppy
Spent Poppy and Pink Coneflower
In this video, we will look at two color palettes - both with the same color family and color relationships, but on two different color wheels.
The story behind Spent Poppy
My mother fills her deck with pots of flowering annuals and perennials - the one place on her property where the deer don’t munch everything down to the ground.
Poppies are one of her favorite spring flowers, their paper thin petals gently billowing in the wind. This one is nearly spent, most petals already torn away, leaving the center sepals and pistil fully exposed as a last call to pollinators. A delicate tetrad in soft spring colors.
the story behind Pink Coneflower
Nature pulls together daring color combinations in this pink echinacea - who would have thought that deep gold with burnt red tips would look so lovely with light pink?
The key to her success is that nature draws the eye from one color to the next. In this case, the base of the petals are a darker pink, with an almost golden undertone (perhaps a reflected glow off of the anthers?). The burnt red, a dark, earthy version of the red-pink veins in the petals. The resulting palette - a triad in warm earthtones.
